DIY & Gardening Safety Tips

As the weather improves we all want to use our outside space more and to do that many of us are thinking of sprucing up our gardens or doing some DIY. So we thought we might share some DIY and gardening tips with you.

Using tools

It is important to use the appropriate tools for the job and understand how to use them properly and follow the safety instructions to protect yourself from injury. You should also ensure that the tools are placed safely when not in use and not accessible to pets and children.

You should ensure that pets and children are also not nearby when you are using machinery that can cause injury or that they will distract you whilst doing activities that could be harmful.

Working at heights

You should take care if you need to work at heights, especially with tools such as those used for cutting back trees or hedges. If you are using ladders seek assistance so that someone can hold the ladders for you and keep them steady. You should also take care to ensure that they are on a firm and stable surface before climbing them, and ensure that someone passes you the tools or they are easily accessible so you don’t have to overreach for them.

Use of chemicals

Many chemicals such as fertilisers and pesticides are used in gardening which can be harmful in concentrated forms, so take care handling them and ensure that they are stored as directed on the packaging and away from pets and children.

You should protect your eyes, airways and skin from chemicals by wearing sleeves and trousers, goggles and a face mask.

Also, take care using compost and wash your hands and fingernails well afterwards.

Protect yourself

Protecting yourself from injury from tools is not the only thing to think about.

The activities involved in gardening and DIY can cause repetitive strain injuries and lead to back pain, so it is important to ensure that you are lifting things correctly and avoiding continuous activities. Take breaks and vary the activities you are doing to prevent fatigue and muscle aches.

Be aware of the weather conditions and dress appropriately to protect your skin from the sun and apply sun cream. It is also advisable to avoid working during the midday sun and keep yourself hydrated.

During periods of short rain or drizzle avoid gardening as allergen loads on the ground are high and can impact those with allergies.

Whatever your gardening and DIY plans are take care and enjoy the improvements you make.
