Enjoy firework fun safely

Autumn is here and soon will be the fun of Halloween and Bonfire Night which always makes this time of year special. But there’s always a serious side to Bonfire Night as fire and fireworks present a danger that most events don’t include. So, we thought we’d share some timely safety advice whether you are hosting or attending a display.

Organised displays

Attending an organised display can be much easier, safer and cheaper, but you still need to think about keeping your family safe. If you have younger children, in particular, you may want to think about discussing safety with them and picking out a landmark to go to if lost or what to do if they get lost. Dressing them in something distinctive is also very useful to keep an eye on them!

Dress warmly but ensure that if you are using sparklers that clothing is safe whilst using them, such as removing gloves that might be flammable, tying back scarves and hair. When using a sparkler make sure that you have plenty of room to wave them around safely.

If your child is sensitive to loud noises consider taking or purchasing ear defenders to reduce the sound and make the event less stressful for them.

Hosting a firework display

If you are planning on hosting a display you will have a bit more to think about including purchasing fireworks that display the CE mark and ensuring that you store them safely until your event.

You will need to consider a safe area for setting off the fireworks and a separate viewing area. You should ensure that you follow the instructions with the fireworks and follow the Firework Code to protect yourself and others. The most important points are to keep naked flames away from fireworks when not lighting them and don’t return to lit fireworks.

If you plan to have a bonfire you should build it so that it is contained well and is away from trees and buildings. You should also not use accelerants such as paraffin or petrol on the bonfire. You should also ensure that the bonfire is completely out before you leave it unattended.

Don’t forget your pets

Many pets hate fireworks, and it is important to protect them from the noise and stress it can cause them. Keep your pets inside in a safe area and give them some background noise from a radio or tv to lessen the impact of the bangs if you leave them.

Whatever your plans are, have a fun and safe evening!
